The manufacturer, distributor and marketer of premium lubricating oils and greases to the automotive, industrial, marine and aviation industries will celebrate its 100th birthday in 2019.
Established on 1 July 1919 by Charles Wakefield, Castrol has been globally oiling the wheels of the industry since the inception of the motorcar, revolutionising the transport industry.
Wakefield left his job at Vacuum Oil to start a new business selling lubricants for trains and heavy machinery. With a particular interest in the automobile and aeroplane, Wakefield’s team developed a mix of castor oil and a vegetable oil made from castor beans to suit these new engines perfectly. And so, Castrol was born.
Behind some of the biggest names in Australian motorsport, Castrol holds the title as the most winning oil at the iconic Bathurst circuit at Mount Panorama where King of the Mountain, Peter Brock, took his eight of nine Bathurst wins on Castrol lubricant.
